Episode 12: 5 Continents...10 Countries...And More than 59 Thousand Miles!
BJ & TYLER LEAD THE FINAL THREE Knowing that the end of the Race was near, the final three Teams left Thailand for Tokyo in hot pursuit of the million dollar prize. The battle between best friends BJ & Tyler and Eric & Jeremy continued as they competed for flights, rode roller coasters and pedaled giant swan boats to the Pit Stop in Lake Yamanaka, Japan. Although the Frat Boys believed they had a physical advantage over BJ & Tyler, the managed to surpass them and pedaled their swan boat into first place. Meanwhile, Ray & Yolanda's sense of direction, or lack thereof, hurt them again. Although the dating couple lagged behind the and the frats for most of the leg, they vowed to Phil that despite finishing last and having their money and possessions taken away, they were still in the Race.

TOKYO BOUND Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 11:18 pm, best friends BJ & Tyler opened their first clue to discover they had to travel almost 75 miles by taxi to the province of Ayutthaya and search for the Royal Kraal. Once there, one of the elephants in ceremonial dress would give the Teams a T-Mobile Sidekick that contained their next clue.
Pulling up to the Royal Kraal, BJ & Tyler, after saying a quick hello to the elephants, noted the sign on the gate that said it wouldn't open until 4 am. This gave friends Eric & Jeremy and dating couple Ray & Yolanda plenty of time to join BJ & Tyler at the gate.
When the gate opened, the three Teams each ran to one of the very large elephants that had a T-Mobile Sidekick in its trunk. Reading the clue on the Sidekick, the Teams learned they had to fly over 7,000 miles to Tokyo, Japan. Once there, they had to drive themselves to Shibuya, Tokyo's version of Times Square and the world's busiest intersection. Then, they had to scan the many big screen TVs for the one flashing a hint of the location of their next clue.
Confident due to Tyler's previous visits to Japan and his ability to speak Japanese, BJ & Tyler strolled into the Bangkok Airport thinking a Japanese airline could get them there the fastest. However, Ray & Yolanda and Eric & Jeremy secured tickets on the earliest United Airlines flight landing at 2:15 pm while BJ & Tyler wasted time at the Japanese airlines. This cost them dearly when they discovered the United flight was completely booked forcing them to settle for a flight landing at 4 pm.

GONE TO THE DOG Landing in Tokyo, friends Eric & Jeremy and dating couple Ray & Yolanda shared a shuttle to the Hotel Nikko where they each picked up a car to drive into the crowded city. While Ray & Yolanda rashly decided to take the early lead on the drive, Eric & Jeremy took the time to ask in the hotel lobby for directions to downtown Tokyo. With a printed map in hand, Eric & Jeremy's thoroughness paid off handsomely as they navigated with few difficulties through the city while Ray & Yolanda became so lost that BJ & Tyler, who landed almost two hours later, managed to pass them.
Arriving in the very crowded Shibuya, Eric & Jeremy scanned the entire square looking for their clue amid the dizzying array of big screen televisions. After a few minutes, the friends spotted a sign that read "Find Hachiko" in yellow and red lights. Teams needed to figure out that Hachiko was the name of a statue in Shibuya erected to honor a beloved dog in Japanese lore. A man would be waiting there with the next clue.

MAIDEN VOYAGE After asking some locals for directions to Hachiko, Eric & Jeremy came upon the statue to discover a Detour. In this Detour, Teams had to choose between Maiden and Messenger. In Maiden, Teams would travel seven miles by taxi to a Japanese garden and use a palanquin, a centuries old method of transporting Asian royalty, to carry a maiden one third of a mile to a tea ceremony. In Messenger, Teams needed to travel on foot 200 yards to a parking lot where they would pick up a pair of folding bikes and two messenger bags, each containing a parcel. Then, after assembling the bikes, they would to ride through the chaotic Tokyo traffic and deliver the packages to two separate buildings listed on each parcel.
While BJ & Tyler arrived at Hachiko and chose to deliver parcels, Eric & Jeremy began the slow walk through the garden carrying their Japanese maiden. Realizing how heavy the palanquin and the maiden were starting to feel on his shoulders, Jeremy became somewhat concerned, but still had other things on his mind when he commented, "Hopefully, we have a hot one." After delivering the maiden to the tea ceremony, the friends opened up the palanquin and assisted the maiden who handed them their next clue. After Eric remarked, "This is like a naughty fantasy come true," the friends opened the clue to learn they had to make their way to the Capsule Land Hotel.
Tyler's familiarity with Tokyo and ability to speak Japanese aided his Team as they easily navigated the city to deliver the two parcels just as Ray & Yolanda finally found Shibuya and the Hachiko statue. Not wanting to search the city for more buildings, the dating couple chose to deliver a maiden, which they successfully completed, but not before bumping their palanquin into a tree.
Arriving at the Capsule Land Hotel in first place, Eric & Jeremy received fresh linens and pajamas and spent the night in a capsule, a style of lodging common in crowded Tokyo. The pair also received a 9 am departure time, 15 minutes ahead of second place BJ & Tyler, and 30 minutes ahead of last place Ray & Yolanda.

WILD RIDE The following morning Eric & Jeremy opened their clue at 9 am to discover they had to drive almost 80 miles to Fujikyo Highlands, an amusement park at the base of Mt. Fuji. Wildly popular among the youth of Japan, its roller coasters are some of the fastest and tallest in the world.
Pulling into the amusement park together, Eric & Jeremy and BJ & Tyler opened their next clue to find a Roadblock. In this Roadblock, one Team member had to experience the adrenaline rush of three consecutive thrill rides: The Pizza, Denbo and Fujiyama. While coping with the rides, they also had to maintain enough composure to spot a man holding a sign with a message somewhere along the way on one of the rides. Once they completed the three rides, they would tell a park manager what message they saw to earn their next clue.
Riding the thrill rides together, Tyler and Jeremy saw no message on the pendulum-like Pizza or the high speed Denbo. However, Tyler tried to trick Jeremy when he told him that he spotted a sign, causing Jeremy to worry and doubt himself. Then, in between the corkscrews and vomit inducing loops of Fujiyama, Jeremy realized that Tyler lied to him when they both spotted a sign saying "Lake Yamanaka." Opening their clues, the two Teams discovered they needed to travel seven miles to Lake Yamanaka, take a swan boat, and peddle out to the Big Swan, a popular boat and the Pit Stop.

SWAN LAKE Like so many legs before, the Hippies and Frat Boys arrived together at Lake Yamanaka resulting in perhaps the silliest race to the Pit Stop ever as both Teams jumped in giant swan boats and began pedaling to Phil. While believing they had a distinct physical advantage, Eric & Jeremy actually fell behind on the lake while BJ & Tyler pedaled furiously to earn a first place victory. For their win, BJ & Tyler each won a T-Mobile Sidekick along with three years of free service. Standing in second place, Jeremy let it be known that he didn't appreciate Tyler's deception at the Roadblock. "The last leg, it's on," promised Jeremy. After another day of wrong directions and bickering, dating couple Ray & Yolanda stepped on the mat in last place losing all of their money and possessions. Still optimistic, Ray told Phil, "We're gonna win the money. We'll have that million dollar check."
