Episode 5: “Good Thing I Took That Human Anatomy Class in High School”
"DOUBLE DS" DONE IN BY LAKE & MICHELLE A computer made all the difference for best friends BJ & Tyler who kept their lead throughout the leg after being the only Team to book tickets online on the earliest flight to Palermo, Italy. When a ticketing mistake put married parents Lake & Michelle in last place, they managed to pull ahead of childhood friends Danielle & Dani just long enough to Yield them. The Yield allowed dating couple Ray & Yolanda to pass Danielle & Dani who became the fourth Team eliminated from the race.

AIR WARS Departing the Pit Stop at 2:15 am, friends Eric & Jeremy opened their clue to discover they needed to fly 850 miles to Palermo, Italy on the island of Sicily. After arriving, they had to take a taxi to the Teatro Massimo, a 100-year-old opera house, for their next clue.
At the airport, Eric & Jeremy found the fastest flight on Al Italia landing at 10:15 am, but the ticket counter wasn’t open. Joining them, married parents Lake & Michelle opted to search on the Internet while best friends BJ & Tyler engaged in a wheelchair race with Eric & Jeremy. After BJ lost in the obstacle course to Eric, the best friends decided to join up with Lake & Michelle at a bank of computers where Michelle struggled to find information written in English. However, BJ & Tyler quickly located and booked the 10:15 am Al Italia flight from their computer. Immediately afterward, a frustrated Michelle couldn’t find the flight listed on her computer because it was now sold out. While Lake & Michelle ran off to book a Lufthansa flight landing at 2 pm, friends Eric & Jeremy took their chances waiting on standby for Al Italia, which paid off as they joined best friends BJ & Tyler as the first Teams out of Munich. However, in Rome, Eric & Jeremy discovered a ticketing problem, which placed them on the second flight to land in Palermo behind BJ & Tyler.
Joining married parents Lake & Michelle on the Lufthansa flight out of Munich were married couple Fran & Barry and dating couples Dave & Lori and Joseph & Monica. While at the ticket counter, Fran & Barry tried to be secretive when discovering an earlier connection in Rome on Al Italia that Lake & Michelle missed, getting them in at 1:25 pm instead of 2 pm. When Lake & Michelle walked up to simply greet them, Fran & Barry shouted for them to step away. On Fran’s seemingly rude behavior, Lake told Michelle, “She’s a doctor’s wife. She shouldn’t be acting like that.” In Rome, Lake & Michelle discovered the connecting Al Italia flight that the other three Teams had booked. However, the flight was now full, so they remained on the Lufthansa flight landing at 2 pm with dating couple Ray & Yolanda and childhood friends Danielle & Dani. Now on the last flight, a furious Lake said, “We went from first to last, dang it!”

CIAO! Landing in Palermo in first place, best friends BJ & Tyler took a taxi through the picturesque city to find the Teatro Massimo. Opening their clue, they discovered they had to drive 42 miles to the seaside town of Castellammare del Golfo, named after an ancient fortress.
As BJ & Tyler sped off in their marked cars, the remaining seven Teams descended upon Palermo on three separate flights. While friends Eric & Jeremy maintained their lead, commenting on Italian women, an irritated Lake & Michelle found themselves in last place behind childhood friends Danielle & Dani. However, Danielle’s inability to drive a stick shift soon afforded Lake & Michelle an opportunity to pass the childhood friends.

CLOTHING OPTIONAL Arriving at Castellammare del Golfo in first place, best friends BJ & Tyler found a Detour. In this Detour, Teams had to choose between Foundry and Laundry. In Foundry, Teams had to walk to a nearby metal works and pick up a 110-pound church bell. Then, using a vehicle known as an Ape, they must drive the bell to a church, Chiesa Maria, and hand deliver it up a set of steps. In Laundry, Teams needed to find an intersection littered with laundry lines and search among 2,400 pieces of laundry to find one of 16 items of clothing marked with a red and yellow tag.
While BJ & Tyler stared in surprise at the endless rows of hanging clothes, the best friends quickly got down to business inspecting the garments for the red and yellow tag. BJ squealed with delight when he spotted one sewn inside of a bright pink women’s blouse. Opening their clue, the pair learned they had to drive 13 miles to the ancient city of Segesta and find the archeological zone. Once there, they would need to hike one mile to the Teatro di Segesta, an amphitheater built in the fifth century. The pair quickly took off, gleefully noting that a Yield would be waiting for them, perhaps to use on “the frat boys” Eric & Jeremy.

RACE ANATOMY After friends Eric & Jeremy found a marked piece of laundry, their concern turned to the possibility of being Yielded. When best friends BJ & Tyler arrived at the Teatro di Segesta, they momentarily toyed with the idea, but ultimately decided to Yield no one. Instead, after opening their next clue, the pair found a Roadblock. In this Roadblock, one Team member had to correctly piece together a classical Greek statue. The Teams didn’t know that there were two extra pieces not needed to complete the statue.
As Tyler began assembling his statue, dating couple Joseph & Monica opted to carry the heavy and cumbersome bell to an Ape. Noting the amount of energy needed for the task, married couple Fran & Barry immediately decided to sort through laundry instead, but walked past the clue box, just like in Sao Paulo, before doing so. While Monica asked to help Joseph carry the bell up the steps, he insisted on doing it alone, toting it on his back. Cheering him on, Monica said, “Oh baby, you’re Hercules.”
With dating couple Ray & Yolanda also carrying the bell, dating couple Dave & Lori searched through the many clotheslines with no luck. Soon, married parents Lake & Michelle and childhood friends Danielle & Dani joined the frustrated couple in the laundry hunt. Concerned, Lori told Dave, “We need to kick it in high gear.” Knowing that whoever would pick the lucky clothesline would have an advantage in this Race for last place, the three Teams continued looking until a relieved Lori finally found a shirt with a marked tag. After Michelle found one for her Team, Danielle lamented, “This whole thing has been about luck and we don’t have any of it. That’s the problem.” Alone in last place, Dani looked inside a blue pair of shorts and brought a smile to her partner’s face when she at last found a red and yellow tag.
As Eric & Jeremy pulled up to the Teatro di Segesta, Tyler realized that his statue contained two extra pieces, thus completing the task. Opening their clue, the best friends discovered they had to run downhill one mile on foot to the Tempio di Segesta, a temple built in fifth century B.C. and the Pit Stop for this leg of the Race. Stepping onto the mat in first place, an excited BJ & Tyler gladly accepted a digital imaging package from Duracell, complete with a digital camera, photo printer, computer, and Duracell PowerPix batteries for their victory. Finishing in second place, disappointed friends Eric & Jeremy told Phil they made too many mistakes today.

YIELDED After dating couple Joseph & Monica cruised to a third place finish, married couple Fran & Barry ran up to Phil on the mat at the temple, but encountered a lost Lake & Michelle, unable to find the Yield mat. When Lake asked Barry for assistance, he simply said, “Can’t tell ya,” as he and Fran finished in fourth place. Realizing that the teatro was at the top of the hill, Lake & Michelle ran in an effort to beat childhood friends Danielle & Dani, who now arrived in the parking lot, with the intentions of yielding them. Arriving first, Lake & Michelle apologized as they place Danielle & Dani’s picture on the Yield before Lake began the Roadblock next to Lori. Arriving at the Yield mat, a stunned Danielle & Dani turned over the hourglass to begin serving their punishment doled out by Lake & Michelle. Furious, Danielle said, “That’s pathetic. Obviously, they felt threatened by us.“ Dani added, “Payback’s a bitch. They’re hicks from the South and they’re jerkoffs”
As the girls fumed, Lori began to get frustrated when she couldn’t figure out what to do with the two pieces that didn’t fit in her statue. After taking her completed torso off in an attempt to change a piece of the leg, she still didn’t realize that the two pieces were simply extraneous. This delay allowed Lake to complete his statue first as he and Michelle stepped onto the mat in fifth place.
After all of the sand filtered through the hourglass, Dani began building the statue for her Team as Lori, in tears, still struggled to figure out how all of the pieces fit together. Finally, after putting the statue back together again the way she originally built it, she asked a judge who handed her a clue. Although frustrated at not seeing her mistake, Lori stepped onto the mat in sixth place with Dave. On the mat, a teary Dave told Phil he didn’t like the frustration that the Race sometimes caused between them. A hug from Lori assured Dave that everything was okay.

DON’T LOOK NOW As Dani slowly constructed her statue, dating couple Ray & Yolanda, after an afternoon of wrong turns and bad directions, finally arrived at the Teatro di Segesta. With his back against the wall, Ray began putting the pieces of his statue together, as a worried Yolanda cheered him on. Danielle, seeing Ray’s fast progress, encouraged Dani to pick up the pace. Sensing her nervousness, Ray chimed in, “Come on, Dan, because I’m coming. I’m coming like Christmas.” When Dani’s judge inspected her statue, she received a denial while at the same moment Ray received his clue for having completed the task. The relieved dating couple stepped onto the mat in seventh place, saying, “We’re back in it.”
Arriving at the mat in last place, childhood friends Danielle & Dani joked, “Just tell us Phil.” Indeed, the pair had been eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE. On the experience, Dani said, “We’ve learned more in the Race than people learn in a lifetime about themselves. We definitely have strong minds and big hearts. We’re the Double D’s from New York.”
