Perth, Australia

The capital of the state of Western Australia, Perth is a friendly, laid-back city whose culturally diverse population gives it a cosmopolitan feel. Situated on the banks of the Swan River, between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Ranges, Perth is known for its beautiful white sand beaches, sparkling waters and clear blue skies. It’s one of the best spots in Australia to sail and also claims to have more days of sunshine than any of the other state capitals in the “land down under.” Located over 1,550 miles from another city similar to it in size, it’s often referred to as the “most isolated capital city on earth.” Because of this, Perth is surrounded by more natural attractions than any other major city in the world.

In 1826, Captain James Stirling, a Scotsman, was so taken by the area’s natural environment that he suggested a colony be established there. The British Government agreed and Perth was founded in 1829 as part of the Swan River Colony. (Of course, Aboriginals had been living in the area for thousands of years prior to its colonization.) Queen Victoria declared Perth a city in 1856.

Today, Perth continues to grow rapidly thanks to the development of Western Australia’s mineral wealth. While many never make the trip to Perth, claiming it’s too far away and pricey to travel to, don’t dismiss it. The city itself is relatively inexpensive. Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, explore its fabulous wine region, or swim with dolphins, Perth could be your perfect travel destination.

Northbridge
Looking for a little entertainment? Then head just north of the railway line to the Northbridge precinct where you’ll find an abundance of stores, restaurants and nightclubs. Thanks to Italian, Greek and Asian influences, you won’t be disappointed by the wide variety of food choices. Several museums are also located in Northbridge, such as the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Perth Institute of Contemporary art and the Western Australia Museum.

Beaches
You can’t visit Perth without seeing what is said to be some of the most pristine coastline in the world. The only Australian city where the sun sets over the ocean’s horizon, Perth’s coastline is known as the “Sunset Coast.” Whether you want to swim, surf, fish, or sunbathe in the buff, you shouldn’t have a problem since Perth has 19 powdery white beaches, located just minutes from the city, that never seem to be too crowded. A favorite beach of the locals is Cottesloe, which draws young crowds and families. It’s a great spot for swimming, body boarding, surfing and snorkeling. In need of an all-over tan? Go au natural at Swanbourne beach. If you’re a surfer, head 15 minutes northwest of the city to Scarborough Beach and Trigg Island. Looking for sunset fishing? Try City Beach or Floreat Beach. There’s a beach for everyone!

Round House
Built in 1831, this 12-sided limestone structure is Western Australia’s oldest public building. Originally a prison, the Round House was the site of the colony’s first hanging. It was later used to imprison Aboriginals before they were incarcerated on Rottnest Island. Thanks to its prime location in Fremantle, high on an edge above the Indian Ocean, visitors to the Round House are treated to beautiful views of Swan River, Perth and Rottnest Island.

Caversham Wildlife Park
Located in a renowned bushland area of Swan Valley, the Caversham Wildlife Park encourages its visitors to see and touch native animals such as koalas and kangaroos in their natural habitat. Although most of the park’s animals are Australian, it is home to many other exotic animals as well such as monkeys, llamas and even camels. Be sure to bring your camera. It may be the only chance you’ll ever have to get a photo of yourself cuddling with a wombat.

Rockingham Dolphins
Just 40 minutes south of Perth sits Rockingham, a seaside town from which tourists can take a boat tour out to the shallows of Rockingham’s bays and swim with wild dolphins in their natural environment.
