One of the world's natural wonders, Ha Long Bay, also known as Halong Bay, is located in northern Vietnam, about 130 miles east of Hanoi. The region is not only famous for its spectacular scenery, but has also provided backdrop for a number of international films including the James Bond adventure, The Man with the Golden Gun. The majestic scenery of the limestone cliffs and blue-green waters is best experienced by boat as this remarkable collection of islands and rock formations is guaranteed to beckon the visitor to explore further. The bay is reknowned for its scenic rock formations, and its dragon legend. According to the legend, the bay was formed by a great dragon who lived in the mountains. As he ran towards the sea, its tail gouged out valleys which later filled out with water, leaving only bits of land over the surface, the many tiny islets. The name Ha Long is literally translated as "Bay of Descending Dragons." Prior to the 19th century, this region was known as An Bang, Luc Thuy or Van Don, but in the late 19th century the name Halong Bay appeared on a French Marine Map. Now a World Heritage Area, Ha Long Bay has always been the prime tourist attraction in northern Vietnam. But for the locals, the area is known for its huge coal mines that supply much of the energy to keep Vietnam's industries working. The Ha Long Bay is dotted with around 3000 limestone islets rising from emerald green waters. Because of their steep cliffs and narrow escarpments, most of the islands are uninhabited and unaffected by a human presence. The islands feature endless numbers of beaches, grottoes, and caves.
